Coliseum Sports Bowl1 MacCurtain Street, Co. CorkTen Pin Bowling is an indoor game played between individuals or teams. A player tries to knock down ten pins placed in a triangle, the apex of which is 60 ft away at the end of their lane. If the bowler knocks down all ten pins with the very first delivery (or after the second delivery) the pins are put up again by an automatic machine, known as the pinspotter. The balls are automatically returned to the bowler's end of the lane. Scoring is progressive. Each line on the score sheet represents a game for one player. Ten frames of ten pins make up a game, and points are awarded for the number of pins knocked down. In each frame, two deliveries are made; except in the tenth when you have three rolls of the ball. If all the pins are knocked down by the first ball, called a strike, the player is rewarded by a bonus 10 points plus the score of the next two balls bowled. WHAT SIZE BALL DO I USE? Because the bowling ball is the only piece of equipment with which you control the game, it is crucial to find the right fit. There are different weights of balls, and you need to find the one that suits the size of your hand. To find the fit, put your thumb in the thumbhole; go as far down as you can. Your thumb should slide easily in and out. Now, insert your middle and ring fingers on their respective holes. If you have to raise the thumb to insert, the span is too wide. Swing the ball back and forth. If you drop it or feel you will, the span is too narrow. The secret to a good fit is in the span. Some bowling centres have equipment for measuring you hand for a ball. Ask the advice of one of the bowling experts at the centre. DELIVERY Once you have found the right ball, you should concentrate on your method of delivery. Four Steps: 1 In the first step forward the pins, you aim the ball by centering it with your line of vision. 2 With the second step, the arm drops down. 3 As the right foot begins the third step, the weight of the ball is taken up by the arm and wrist, and the shoulders and body are square to the pins. As the step is completed the ball reaches its fullest height in the backswing. 4 With the fourth step, the ball swings down, knees are bent, body is forward. The left foot goes into a slide and the ball swings forward and is released above or in front of the foul line. | |
