West of Inchadoney is Rosscarbery Bay, with the picturesque little town of Roscarbery in an elevated position on the shore. This is a quiet spot with good bathing and sea fishing. In the sixth century St Factna founded a monastery here, which became famous for its school.

266. Schull

Schull, a small village with a quaint little harbour, Bathing, boating, yachting, water skiing, sea angling and pony-trekking are among the attractions here. There is a planetarium (the only one in the Republic) attached to the Community College in Schull, which is open to visitors during the season. The road onwards to Mizen Head (18 miles/29 km from Schull) sweeps round lovely Toormore Bay to Goleen, with its secluded sandy beach.

268. Sherkin Island

For a really 'away from it all' holiday you could do a lot worse than choose this island off the tip of Baltimore on the fringe of Roaringwater Bay. It is quite unspoilt, and there are cliffs and strands and rocky bays, and always the magnificent views of the coast and the comings and goings of boats. The island has the ruins of a 15th-century Franciscan Friary.
