Mallow, on the River Blackwater 22 miles (35 km) north of Cork city, is a sugar-manufacturing centre in the middle of a rich agricultural region. Mallow is well known as an angling and hunting centre; there is also a race-course and golf (18).

There is a very large distillery in the town which produces the bulk of Irish whiskey and gin. An interpretative centre, depicting the history, methods of distillation and other aspects of the industry, is open to the public. There is golf (18) near by.

Millstreet is romantically situated among the mountains on the south side of the River Blackwater. It has an international horse show every year, organised at the initiative of a local businessman.

A quiet town nicely situated between the hills and near the source of the Blackwater River. It has a little local museum. International Equestrian events are now staged annually in this progressive town.

Coolclough Church, built in 1833, is a Gothic extravaganza created by a local sculptor, Charles O' Connell: other creations of his can be seen locally.
