Here the River Lee widens into lakes, around which there is a lovely lake drive. This is an Irish-speaking area, and there is a college to house young people who come to learn the language.

176. Ballinhassig

The traditional farming community of Ballinhassig is situated on the N71 wihtin 10km of Cork City. This gateway to West Cork offers visitors a full range of facilities including restaurants and pubs with free Irish entertainment. The area is known for road bowling and a thriving equestrian environment, featuring hunting, point-to-point meetings, gymkhanas, riding centres and horse breeders. Locally, a typical working Open Farm hosts a range of farm animals including unusual breeds, allowing adults and children firsthand views of farm life. The farm is signposted off the N71. The village of Halfway offers free access to an agricultural and transport museum displaying examples of machinery, vehicles and farming implements of a bygone era. The village is overlooked by a unique feat of engineering, a massive stone viaduct built circa 1850.

Ballycotton, Cork, Ireland

177. Ballycotton

Situated on a cliff 26 miles (42 km) south-east of Cork city, this fishing village looks out over the wide inlet of Ballycotton Bay. In front is a steep island crowned by a lighthouse, and between this island and the village is the sheltered, boat-filled little harbour. For centuries fishermen have worked the plentiful bay off Ballycotton.

178. Ballydehob

On the map it looks like a remote spot, but this lively and gaily painted village is the centre for an area which has attracted a thriving international artistic and literary community. A good place to stop for a drink or cup of coffee and get all the local gossip.
