170. AdrigoleA scattered village strung along the head of a lovley inlet on the very scenic south coast of the Beara Peninsula. Looming over it is Hungry Hill (687m) with two rock-girt lakes which feed a fine cascade after rain. Hungry Hill is the highest of the Caha range which forms the spine of the peninsula, and gave its name to Daphne de Maurier's novel about the local copper-mining barons of the 19th century. 172. AllihiesNear the tip of the Beara Peninsula. This was the centre of a rich copper-mining district. Cornish workers were brought over in the 19th Century as technical experts and some remains of their 'Cornish Village' can still be seen. Around the workings you can pick up nice rocks glittering with pyrites - 'fool's gold' - but please be extremely careful if exploring here as there are dangerous unguarded mineshafts and other hazards. 173. BallincolligNow a rapidly growing satellite town of Cork City. It had, during the last century, an enormous gunpowder factory known as Powdermills, sited beside the River Lee. This has now been turned into a recreation area, and you can walk through the various old buildings and see the canals which worked the grinding wells and carried materials from one place to another.
