284. Cloyne
Cloyne, a small town to the east of Cork Harbour, has associations with three remarkable though diverse personalities: Gerge Berkeley, the philosopher who was Bishop here from 1734 to 1753 before going onto found a university in Bermuda - largely with money donated by Vanessa, the mysterious lady friend of Johathan Swift, Dean of St Patrick's in Dublin and author of Gulliver's Travels. William Penn, founder of the State of Pennsylvania - the family home was at Shanagarry. Christy Ring, probably the greatest hurler Ireland ever produced, was born here and is commemorated by a sculpture of him in the town. Long before any of these, gentle St Coleman, a poet in Latin and Irish founded a monastery here, of which the 33m Round Tower still stands. In the medieval cathedral Berkeley is commemorated by a fine alabaster tomb.

285. Coachford
This is the Lee Valley and nearby is Farran Wood with deer and wild geese. It is part of the ancient barony of Muskerry and is rich in antiquities- stone cicles, wedge tombs, ring forts. The Boggeragh mountains lie to the north and the leaflet 'Antiquities of the Boggeragh Mountains' will lead you on many a happy exploration. Between here and Macroom, travelling along the river, you'll come to the ruined Carrigadrohid Castle standing on a rocky island. It survived several decades of stormy history. In 1650 Lord Broghill, the Commonwealth General, hanged the Bishop of Ross before it because he refused to induce the Irish garrison to surrender.

Cork is the largest county in Ireland, with an area of 2880 square miles. | 288. Cork city |
Cork, Ireland's third largest city, is excellently situated for exploring the Cork coast and river valleys-and indeed the whole of south-west Ireland.
Cork is a place of commercial importance, largely due to the excellence of its harbour.
