339. Sherkin island
For a really 'away from it all' holiday you could do a lot worse than choose this island off the tip of Baltimore on the fringe of Roaringwater Bay. It is quite unspoilt, and there are cliffs and strands and rocky bays, and always the magnificent views of the coast and the comings and goings of boats. The island has the ruins of a 15th-century Franciscan Friary.

341. Timoleague
Three miles away from Courtmacsherry is Timoleague Abbey, in its day one of the most important religious houses in Ireland. The existing ruins are of the Fourteenth-century Franciscan friary founded by a prince of Thomond, Donal Glas MacCarthy; it succeeded an earlier house founded here by St Molaga (Timoleague means House of Molaga.)
